US First Lady Melania Trump is playing a unique diplomatic role by organizing a meeting at the White House between Russian and Ukrainian representatives on November 5. This initiative follows her involvement in securing a temporary ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, located in Ukraine’s Kherson region.
The White House announced that Melania Trump will address the ceasefire during an event scheduled for 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday. Her office noted that she independently initiated contact with both sides to facilitate a humanitarian agreement. The ceasefire, which lasted from October 27 to November 1, allowed several hundred civilians to evacuate the area, with most relocating to Ukrainian-controlled territory.
Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, credited Melania Trump’s team for helping to secure the ceasefire and coordinate the evacuation efforts. The agreement was reportedly signed by representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States, with Washington acting as a guarantor.
Despite the temporary pause in fighting, concerns linger regarding the situation in Oleshky. Ukrainian military personnel have expressed worries that Russian forces might have used the ceasefire to move equipment and fortify their positions. Ukrainian officials, however, have countered claims of ceasefire violations, explaining that some movements were tied to demining operations.
Humanitarian assistance is still being provided to the civilians remaining in Oleshky, and further evacuations might be considered in the upcoming months. The scheduled meeting on November 5 could serve as a platform to discuss the humanitarian agreement and explore additional diplomatic engagements between the two nations. However, the White House has not yet revealed the identities of the representatives who will attend or provided details regarding the meeting’s agenda.
