The European Union is stepping up its role in addressing the protracted Cyprus conflict by appointing new envoys and expressing renewed support for the United Nations-led peace initiatives. This move comes as anticipation builds for an upcoming visit by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the region.
Despite these efforts, Turkish Cypriot authorities have voiced concerns regarding the EU’s neutrality in the matter. They argue that the EU cannot act as an impartial participant in the peace process since the Republic of Cyprus is already a member of the bloc. Furthermore, the Turkish Cypriot side criticized the EU for failing to consult them before appointing a new envoy for Cyprus.
The European Commission has responded by outlining the mandate of its special representative, who will focus on fostering trust between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The representative is also tasked with supporting the resumption of peace talks under the UN’s guidance. EU officials have consistently reiterated their dedication to aiding efforts aimed at reaching a durable resolution to the conflict.
The Cyprus issue has remained an unresolved geopolitical challenge for decades, with negotiations at a standstill since 2017. The Turkish Cypriot leadership insists that any future talks should acknowledge their sovereign equality and equal international standing before formal negotiations can resume.
