European leaders have commended British Prime Minister Keir Starmer following his announcement to resign, which has led to the deferral of the anticipated EU-UK summit. Starmer has been recognized for his significant contributions to enhancing the relationship between the United Kingdom and Europe, with a particular emphasis on security and support for Ukraine.
Ursula von der Leyen expressed gratitude towards Starmer for his efforts in bolstering European and Ukrainian security, highlighting his leadership in fostering enhanced cooperation. António Costa, President of the European Council, conveyed the EU’s hope that Starmer’s successor would maintain the momentum in strengthening ties with the UK.
The postponed EU-UK summit, initially set for July 22, was slated to address critical areas such as trade agreements, youth mobility, and climate policy cooperation. Despite the political transition in Britain, officials have reiterated their commitment to further improving relations between the two entities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also lauded Starmer’s support for Ukraine, noting that their collaboration has fortified European security. Similarly, Germany acknowledged Starmer as a dependable partner, especially concerning foreign policy and matters related to Ukraine.
Starmer’s resignation has elicited a range of reactions from international leaders. Former U.S. President Donald Trump extended his well wishes to Starmer but criticized his stance on immigration, energy policies, and various international decisions. Meanwhile, leaders from Australia and Norway offered their support, recognizing the inherent challenges of political leadership.
