Russia has escalated its offensive on Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, resulting in the death of six railway workers in a recent missile attack. The Ukrainian state railway operator reported that a ballistic missile hit a locomotive depot, leading to these casualties and damaging various railway facilities in the Kyiv area. This assault was part of a broader wave of strikes that claimed at least 12 lives, including children, and left several others injured.
The railway network has been a pivotal element in maintaining Ukraine’s functionality during the conflict, facilitating the transport of civilians, supplies, and military equipment. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion began, 58 railway employees have lost their lives, and over 300 have been injured. The infrastructure has also endured significant damage, with numerous locomotives and carriages affected.
This year has seen a marked increase in Russian attacks on Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, with more than 1,500 incidents reported, surpassing the total for the previous year. The nature of these attacks has evolved, now targeting not just bridges and tracks but also locomotives, depots, and electrical systems. This shift, coupled with Russia’s use of drones and missiles, poses a severe challenge to Ukraine, which is struggling with limited air-defense resources.
The impact on passenger services has been considerable, with trains that once ran punctually now frequently delayed due to air-raid alerts forcing passengers and staff into shelters. Some services experience delays extending for hours. Ukraine’s extensive railway network, stretching about 24,000 kilometers, is crucial for the country’s economy and military logistics. Continued attacks threaten to further disrupt industrial activities, exports, and the movement of people and goods.
Amid this heightened aggression, Ukraine is urging Western allies to supply additional air-defense systems to safeguard its railway infrastructure from Russian attacks. The recent missile strikes coincide with an escalation in Russian drone operations, with over 1,500 drones, including new jet-powered models, launched in recent days. As these attacks grow more frequent, Ukraine faces mounting pressure to defend its critical railway system, vital to both civilian life and the war effort.
