This summer, Europe has experienced a severe series of heatwaves resulting in at least 35,000 excess deaths, with the true impact likely higher as full assessments from various countries are still pending. Germany, France, and Spain have been particularly affected, contributing over 25,000 of these deaths. In Germany, the heatwaves from April to early August have led to approximately 14,000 fatalities, marking it as the deadliest summer on record for heat-related deaths. Similarly, Spain has reported nearly 5,000 deaths attributed to the heat since May, setting a new record for the country.
In France, around 7,300 excess deaths have been recorded between late May and July, though this preliminary figure does not yet include data from August. Other European nations such as the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland have also experienced notable increases in mortality rates during these extreme heat episodes.
The heatwaves have driven temperatures above 40°C in substantial parts of western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records. Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and severity of such heat events to climate change, which is intensifying these extreme weather conditions.
Identifying heat-related deaths poses challenges as extreme temperatures often exacerbate pre-existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health issues, rather than being directly recorded as the cause of death. Experts anticipate the overall death toll across Europe to rise further as delayed mortality data becomes available and figures from August are incorporated.
The significant number of deaths underscores the escalating public health risks associated with more frequent and intense heatwaves, highlighting the urgent need for robust measures to mitigate the impact of such climate-induced phenomena.
