Poland Urges Europe to Strengthen Energy Security and Avoid Russian Ties

Poland has firmly rejected any return to “business as usual” with Russia, emphasizing the need for Europe to focus on energy security and economic independence. Finance Minister Andrzej Domański made these remarks at the Polish-German Economic Forum in Warsaw, urging European countries to learn from past experiences and maintain a strong stance against Moscow following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Before the invasion, Germany and several other European nations were heavily reliant on Russian natural gas and other energy supplies. In response to the conflict, these countries have taken steps to reduce their dependence on Russian energy, aiming to cut off financial support to Moscow. However, there are political factions within Germany advocating for a revival of economic ties with Russia, including the resumption of cheaper energy imports.

Domański dismissed these calls, clearly stating that Poland would not back a return to prior economic relations with Russia. He stressed the importance of energy independence and economic resilience for Europe, highlighting the need for a cautious approach in dealings with Moscow.

Beyond the focus on Russia, Domański also discussed the significance of cooperation between Poland and Germany in addressing geopolitical, technological, and strategic challenges. He outlined the necessity for Europe to develop a stronger economy to remain competitive on the global stage.

The minister called for reducing bureaucratic red tape, fostering competitive energy markets, encouraging technological advancements, and pursuing responsible deregulation. He emphasized that economic growth should align with security priorities, underscoring that these efforts are crucial for maintaining Europe’s stability and independence.

Domański’s statements reflect Poland’s commitment to strengthening Europe’s economic and energy security while advocating for a united front in response to Russian aggression.
