President Trump has revealed exactly what he wants from Iran — not just a deal, but a declaration. During his State of the Union Address, Trump said Tehran must publicly commit to never building a nuclear weapon, describing this pledge as the “secret words” Washington has been waiting to hear.
Trump’s remarks came amid an active, if tense, diplomatic process. Two rounds of negotiations have already taken place this month, signalling that both sides are at least willing to talk. But Trump made clear that talks alone are insufficient — Iran must make a categorical, irreversible commitment.
The president accused Iran of resuming dangerous ambitions, including the advancement of missile technology capable of threatening Europe and American forces abroad. He warned that Iran is working toward missiles that could eventually reach US territory, framing this as an urgent and growing national security concern.
Trump also referenced Operation Midnight Hammer, the US military strike that he said destroyed Iran’s nuclear weapons infrastructure last June. He claimed Iran was warned against rebuilding, yet accused Tehran of doing exactly that, calling its behaviour a direct challenge to American warnings.
While his words were combative, Trump repeatedly emphasised that he prefers a peaceful resolution. The path, he insisted, remains open — but only if Iran is willing to walk through it on America’s terms, starting with that all-important nuclear declaration.
