Polish Parliament Blocks Advancement of Cryptocurrency Legislation Amid Technological Debate

In a significant decision for Poland’s legislative process, the Sejm failed once again to override President Karol Nawrocki’s veto on a bill intended to regulate the country’s crypto asset market. This marks the third attempt that has not succeeded in advancing the legislation. During the vote held on Friday, out of the 442 members of parliament who participated, 241 voted to reject the presidential veto, while 198 opposed the move and three abstained. The attempt fell short of the necessary three-fifths majority required to counteract the president’s veto.

President Nawrocki has consistently blocked the crypto regulation bill, having issued vetoes in December 2025 and February 2026 prior to this latest action. He has maintained that the proposed legislation does not adequately address the concerns highlighted by his office. Nawrocki’s stance is that the bill requires substantial amendments before he would consider giving his approval.

Despite the repeated efforts to pass the bill, the president has indicated his willingness to sign a version that resolves the identified issues. This situation leaves the proposed regulations on the crypto market in a state of limbo unless the legislative body introduces a revised version that aligns with the president’s expectations.

The ongoing stalemate highlights the challenges faced in regulating the burgeoning crypto market, reflecting broader debates about how best to govern digital assets. As the situation stands, the Polish government must navigate these complexities to find a solution that addresses both regulatory needs and the president’s concerns.
