Luxembourg Pledges Ongoing EU Support for Ukraine Amid Russian Threats

Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden has issued a stark warning against the dangers of yielding to Russian aggression, stressing that President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions may extend beyond Ukraine. Speaking after a European Union summit, Frieden emphasized the critical importance of continued military and financial support to Ukraine as essential to preserving its sovereignty and deterring further Russian expansion.

During the summit, EU leaders focused on strategies to curb Russian influence, including the consideration of tighter restrictions on tourist visas for Russian citizens. While a complete ban was not on the table, the aim is to limit the number of Russian visitors as part of broader sanctions. Luxembourg has pledged to align its policy on this matter with Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel.

In addition to the discussions on Ukraine, the summit also addressed the EU’s migration policy. However, leaders failed to reach a consensus. Prime Minister Frieden called for a balanced approach to migration that addresses the challenges of irregular migration while acknowledging the economic contributions of legal migrants. He noted Luxembourg’s significant dependence on foreign workers to fulfill its labor market demands.

The EU’s commitment to Ukraine remains a pivotal aspect of its foreign policy, with leaders like Frieden advocating for sustained support to counteract Russian objectives. The outcomes of the summit reflect the EU’s ongoing efforts to navigate complex geopolitical and domestic issues while maintaining regional stability.
