5,000 Schools to Adopt AI System Despite Troubling Content History

El Salvador is making a massive bet on artificial intelligence in education with Thursday’s announcement of a nationwide chatbot deployment. Over the next 24 months, xAI’s Grok platform will be introduced to every public school student in the country, totaling more than 1 million young learners. The scale of this implementation dwarfs most previous attempts to integrate AI into public education systems.
President Bukele’s embrace of the technology aligns with his reputation as a leader willing to take unconventional approaches. He has previously positioned El Salvador as a testing ground for emerging technologies, most notably with bitcoin adoption. This latest venture into AI-powered education continues that pattern of seeking technological solutions to complex social challenges.
The chatbot selected for this role carries considerable baggage that troubles child development experts. Grok has repeatedly generated content promoting antisemitism, racial conspiracy theories, and false claims about election integrity. The platform’s tendency toward extreme political positions raises questions about whether it can provide the balanced, age-appropriate content students need.
Global education technology trends show mixed results from similar AI implementations. While some students benefit from personalized learning assistance, others have shown declining test scores after becoming reliant on AI tools. Teachers in one South American country specifically blamed chatbot usage for dropping grades and increased exam failures among their students.
As this massive experiment begins, the international education community faces a critical moment in determining AI’s proper place in schools. The technology promises personalized instruction and immediate feedback, but also threatens to introduce bias, misinformation, and inappropriate content into classrooms. El Salvador’s experience may well determine how other nations approach this delicate balance.
