Hubert Hurkacz staged a thrilling comeback to secure his place in the Chengdu Open final, marking his first ATP Tour final appearance of the season. The Polish tennis player overcame a challenging start against Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, clinching victory with scores of 6-7(8-10), 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals held on Monday.
The 29-year-old Hurkacz, who has battled injuries and a dip in world rankings throughout the 2026 season, will now face Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final. Davidovich Fokina advanced to the final after defeating Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the other semifinal matchup.
This upcoming match will be Hurkacz’s 13th career ATP Tour final and his first since competing in Geneva in May 2025. A former world No. 9, Hurkacz is looking to capture his first ATP title since his return from a long-term injury layoff that began in January. He currently trails Davidovich Fokina 2-4 in their head-to-head encounters, adding an extra layer of challenge to the final.
For Hurkacz, reaching the final represents a significant personal achievement in a season marked by hurdles. His performance in Chengdu demonstrates a promising return to form as he aims to reclaim his position among tennis’s elite competitors.
